With Samba, even if you use public = yes, only the owner of that home directory can see the share. This change was done purely for security reasons, and I believe it was the right way to go, as there is no reason why other users should be able to view the content of each other’s home directory. If you tend to share out your ~/Public folder, this causes a big problem with Samba, in that the owner of the home directory is the only one who can access or traverse the folder either locally or across your LAN. To avoid such a security issue, the developers have set the permission to the home directories as 750, which means only the owner of the home directory can view the contents. Previously, the user’s home directory permission was set to 755, which allowed other users to view the directory as well as the containing files and sub-directories. That problem is the default permissions of the user’s home directories. A big change for Samba in Ubuntu 22.04 and how to get around it ![]() ![]() We’ve reached out to both Pantone and Adobe, and will update should either get back to us. Others have reported that even attaching a Pantone licence within Photoshop isn’t fixing the issue, colours still replaced by black, and workarounds sound like a pain. Existing Creative Cloud files and documents containing Pantone Colour references will keep those colour identities and information.” Yet today, people are reporting that their Photoshop is informing them, “This file has Pantone colours that have been removed and replaced with black due to changes in Pantone’s licensing with Adobe.” However, Pantone still states in its out-of-date FAQ that, “This update will have minimal impact on a designer’s workflow. And the solution? It’s an Adobe plug-in to “minimise workflow disruption and to provide the updated libraries to the Adobe Creative Cloud users.” Which, of course, costs $US15 ($21) a month. However, this month, people are noticing the effects, reporting issues with creations using Pantone’s spot colours. It was then due for August 16, then August 31. The removal of Pantone’s colours from Adobe’s software was meant to happen March 31 this year, but that date came and went. Pantone want US$21/month for access, and Solid Coated goes behind the paywall in early November. Today, if you open a PSD (even one that’s 20 years old) with an obscure PANTONE colour, it will remove the colour and make it black. According to Pantone, the two companies started working together in the 1990s, but “since 2010, the Pantone colour libraries within Adobe’s apps have not been updated.” This, apparently, means they’re “significantly out of date and missing hundreds of new Pantone Colours.” (Yes, the company seriously capitalises “Colour”.) This means that, “Pantone and Adobe have together decided to remove the outdated libraries and jointly focus on an improved in-app experience that better serves our users.”įun times ahead for #Adobe designers. Since then, the official reasons given haven’t made a great deal of sense. One industry standard being removed from another was obviously going to create issues, but at the time Adobe said it would be “working on an alternative solution,” while rumours spread that the companies had had a falling out. Last year’s announcement that Adobe would be removing the Pantone “colour books” from its software brought consternation in the design world. Or, to put it another way, they claim to own colours. This extends as far as preventing others from creating “Patone-compatible” colour systems. ![]() ![]() ![]() So, of course in becoming the industry-standard for colour-matching, the company naturally asserts ownership of all its 2,161 hues, defending its intellectual property and preventing its unlicensed use. Pantone has been around since the 1950s, the New Jersey company originally refining printing inks, then later inventing the Pantone Colour Matching System, used worldwide by designers to ensure a creation’s colour will be exactly as desired, no matter where or how it’s manufactured. As of now, widely used Adobe apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign will no longer support Pantone-owned colours for free, and those wishing for those colours to appear in their saved files will need to pay for a separate licence. ![]() ![]() ![]() As she put the finishing touches on her first cookbook, based on the breakfast foods of Huckleberry, Nathan sat down with Food & Wine to talk wedding cakes, Jewish delis and her taste for “crunchy fat.” What dish are you most famous for?During the summer people go crazy for our blueberry-corn cornmeal cake and they’re very, very sad when it’s gone. ![]() It seems very clear that the long lockdown policy would have been deemed an epic error and instead we would have been forced to attempt something else – probably a variant of the original squashing-the-sombrero policy, with a series of strategically-timed short lockdowns to prevent the health system being overwhelmed at the virus’s peak. But imagine that vaccines had not arrived as the second wave hit, and that it had still been thought vaccines might be 18 months to five years away and might be of limited value even when they did arrive. As luck would have it, vaccines arrived just at that moment, changing the game altogether. We had a second, shorter, lockdown, but that achieved very little except to buy time. It was precisely for that reason that the Sage committee in early March did not advise a long tight lockdown. All a long lockdown would achieve was to take case numbers low so that when the second wave came – as it inevitably would – its peak would be higher. Only in isolated island countries such as Taiwan or New Zealand was that plausible (and even they were not consistently successful in practice). Experts on elimination were unanimous on that. Instead we had a long lockdown, lasting into late June, with cases numbers dropping to very low levels.Ī long lockdown never had the remotest chance of eliminating Covid in the UK. If that had indeed been the point of it then we would have been released from lockdown after around three to four weeks, allowing a further phase of spread followed (if required) by another short lockdown to squash the sombrero again, and so on until the pandemic was sufficiently complete that we could leave it to progress without the health system being overwhelmed. The first lockdown did not actually seek to ‘squash the sombrero’. Why everyone is delighted the US women’s soccer team is out ![]() ![]() In its well-known March 2020 paper, Imperial College modelled an alternative scenario with a series of lockdowns and relaxations over a period of at least 18 months, with us being in lockdown around two thirds of the time and out of lockdown for about one third. In that video it was assumed that only one lockdown was feasible. Too early a lockdown would be just as likely to lead to health system collapse (after lockdown inevitably ended) as too late a lockdown would.Ī long lockdown never had the remotest chance of eliminating Covid in the UK Some of you may remember a short video that went viral at the time, with a man pouring water into a bottle with a hole, illustrating that only with a steady flow of cases and occasional lockdowns to prevent overflow could the health system cope. But note that ‘squashing the sombrero’ was not supposed to mean stopping the spread altogether or eliminating the virus domestically. Some very significant restrictions – lockdown or something akin to it – were going to be required. In the end, it turned out that rather than 20 per cent of cases leading to hospitalisation the actual number was more like 3 to 4 per cent, and that instead of 40 million infections it was more like 65 million, but the fundamental story would have been the same – millions of very sick people dealt with without formal medical assistance. So that was going to mean 7.6 million people in hospital in nine weeks versus 170,000 NHS beds, implying millions of people would have to go through severe Covid at home with only their loved ones to assist them. At the time, we were being told that around 20 per cent of cases were leading to hospitalisation and the UK authorities estimated that in an unmitigated epidemic, 95 per cent of the expected 40 million infections would occur in a nine week period. That was the original rationale for lockdowns, and it was an excellent one. ![]() When lockdown was first introduced, Boris Johnson said the point was to ‘squash the sombrero’ of cases, so that the peak number of hospitalisations each week did not overwhelm the NHS. But there is another position here – in many ways perhaps the most obvious position – that rarely gets an airing. The most widely discussed positions are that lockdown occurred too late or that there should never have been any lockdowns at all, alongside the view that what happened was about right. Liz Truss’s statement that she would never authorise another lockdown and The Spectator’s interview with Rishi Sunak have triggered a new debate about whether the lockdowns of 20 were justified. ![]() ![]() ![]() As a result,Similarly, In conclusion, After that.
